Serbia has experienced a sharp escalation in anti-government protests following more than nine months of largely peaceful demonstrations against President Aleksandar Vučić. Violent clashes erupted between supporters of Vučić's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and anti-government protesters in major cities including Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš. The confrontations involved the use of flares, firecrackers, sticks, and missiles, resulting in injuries to more than 70 people, including police officers and civilians. Protesters attacked government offices, notably smashing windows and demolishing the SNS party offices in Novi Sad and Belgrade. Police responded with tear gas and efforts to disperse crowds. The unrest was marked by large groups of men armed with sticks and bottles attacking protesters, and reports of police using batons against demonstrators. President Vučić condemned the violence, vowed mass arrests, and accused Western countries of orchestrating a "color revolution" aimed at destabilizing Serbia. He also pledged not to seek another term and announced early elections in response to the crisis. Student-led protests continue to demand early elections and accuse Vučić of provoking civil conflict. Nearly 50 protesters have been detained amid the ongoing turmoil, which has been fueled by calls for political change following a recent railway disaster that killed sixteen people. Political figures have called for elections as a means to resolve the crisis, emphasizing the inefficiency of street confrontations in addressing Serbia's political challenges.
