Bangladesh has kept Gopalganj under an extended curfew after deadly clashes erupted during a National Citizen Party rally on 16 July, the first anniversary of last year’s student-led uprising. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate, protesters hurled crude bombs and bricks at security forces, prompting the army, police and Border Guard Bangladesh to fire back in what the military described as self-defence. ISPR put the toll at four dead and more than 50 injured, including police officers and journalists. The curfew, initially imposed for 22 hours starting Wednesday night, will remain in force until further notice, with a single three-hour relaxation on Friday to allow residents to buy essentials. Troops and paramilitary units continue joint patrols, and the army has urged citizens to ignore rumours and cooperate with law-enforcement agencies. Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said 25 suspects have been detained and that authorities “will not spare” anyone involved. The Ministry of Home Affairs has named Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani to head a committee probing possible security lapses and the sequence of events that saw a rally stage and even the district jail attacked and vandalised. Opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, condemned the assault on the NCP gathering and accused the interim government of failing to maintain order. The NCP has called for nationwide demonstrations, while Jamaat-e-Islami and other groups demanded accountability for what they describe as politically motivated violence. The unrest comes as the country observed July Shaheed Day, commemorating the death of student activist Abu Saeed during last year’s quota-reform protests that ultimately ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. One year on, the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus faces mounting pressure to stabilise security and set a timetable for new elections.
