Early Sonos Roam speakers are overheating, with enough complaints of melted charging cables, and even a burning plastic smell coming from affected devices forcing the company to respond. By @@MarkozNewz https://t.co/hAvJNpOMag
Sonos Inc. confirmed that a small number of its first-generation Roam portable speakers have overheated, charring or melting the area around the USB-C charging port. The company said it has been “closely tracking” the issue, which surfaced in customer forums and social-media posts and was first reported on 5 Aug 2025. A spokesperson told Bloomberg the incidence rate is “very low” and suggested environmental conditions may play a role. Sonos has not issued a recall, but said it has released software updates and made unspecified hardware changes aimed at reducing the likelihood of overheating. The problem appears confined to the original Roam model introduced in 2021; the 2024 Roam 2 is not implicated. The manufacturing setback comes as Sonos attempts to steady operations under new Chief Executive Officer Tom Conrad, appointed last month after a series of product-related stumbles. The company has not indicated whether further safety actions, such as a voluntary replacement program, are under consideration.
