Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min said he will leave the Premier League club this summer, ending a decade-long stint that began with his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015. Speaking at a press conference in Seoul on 2 August, the 33-year-old forward called the decision "one of the toughest" of his career but said he felt it was "the right time for a change." Son, who is entering the final year of his contract, declined to confirm his next destination. However, he has been heavily linked with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC, and clubs in the Saudi Pro League have also expressed interest. He said any move would need to place him in an environment that helps him prepare for next year’s FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. During his ten seasons in north London, Son scored 160 goals in all competitions—fifth on the club’s all-time list—won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021-22 and last season captained Spurs to the UEFA Europa League title, ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware. Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank, appointed in June, praised Son as "a Spurs legend" and confirmed the forward will lead the side in Sunday’s preseason match against Newcastle United in Seoul. Frank said the club will weigh its options once Son’s future is resolved but added that the player has the full respect of teammates and staff.
