Brentford have completed the signing of England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, handing the 35-year-old a two-year contract that runs to June 2027. The deal returns the former Liverpool captain to the Premier League two seasons after he left Anfield, following spells with Saudi side Al-Ettifaq and, most recently, Ajax Amsterdam. Henderson became a free agent last week after he and Ajax agreed to terminate his contract a year early. The Sunderland-born player had joined the Dutch club in January 2024, making 57 appearances and wearing the armband during the 2024-25 campaign, but opted against activating an extension clause in search of a new challenge. Brentford moved quickly after losing captain Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal. “When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a simple decision,” new head coach Keith Andrews said. “He’s still phenomenally fit and will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad.” Henderson echoed the sentiment, saying he was attracted by the club’s organisation and ambition and that “even at my age, you can still learn and improve.” A Champions League winner in 2019 and Premier League champion in 2020 with Liverpool, Henderson has 84 England caps and remains in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the 2026 World Cup. He will wear the No. 6 shirt in West London and is expected to slot into the holding-midfield role vacated by Nørgaard when Brentford begin pre-season later this month.
