Apple Inc. is weighing the use of large language models from Anthropic PBC or OpenAI to power a revamped version of its Siri voice assistant, people familiar with the matter said. The deliberations represent a significant shift from the company’s longstanding preference for in-house artificial-intelligence technology. According to the discussions, Apple has asked both Anthropic and OpenAI to train bespoke versions of their Claude and ChatGPT models that can operate on Apple’s private cloud infrastructure, allowing the company to retain control of user data. Apple is simultaneously continuing to test an internal “LLM Siri” project and has not yet made a final decision on whether to adopt an external system. The overhaul, now targeted for 2026, follows earlier delays and a shake-up of Apple’s AI leadership that placed senior executive Mike Rockwell in charge of Siri. Apple shares rose about 2 percent on 30 June after Bloomberg first reported the talks.
