OpenAI has launched a new feature for the ChatGPT app on macOS, enabling direct code editing within IDEs such as Xcode, Visual Studio Code, and JetBrains tools. Released on March 6, this update eliminates the need for copying and pasting code between applications. The feature, available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, includes an optional 'auto-apply' mode for seamless code modifications. OpenAI plans to expand access to Enterprise, Education, and free users next week. Alexander Embiricos, a member of OpenAI's product team, demonstrated the capability, which builds on the 'work with apps' functionality introduced in November 2024. With this update, ChatGPT competes with AI coding tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Apple's Swift Assist. While it offers convenience, experts note potential risks related to security, debugging, and reliability of AI-generated code.
