Google has integrated its open-source Gemini command-line interface directly into Zed, the high-performance Rust-based code editor developed by Zed Industries. The tie-up, announced 27–28 August, lets developers generate or refactor code, query error messages and chat with the AI agent without leaving the editor. Users can watch the agent apply changes across multiple files in real time, then review the proposed edits in a pull-request-style interface before accepting them. The collaboration relies on the new Agent Client Protocol (ACP), a JSON-RPC standard created by Zed to let any AI coding agent communicate with an integrated development environment. Google’s Gemini CLI serves as the reference implementation, making Zed the first IDE to ship native ACP support, with an extension also available for Neovim. Zed and Google say the protocol is intended to break vendor lock-in and provide an open alternative to Microsoft’s VS Code ecosystem. Gemini CLI has attracted rapid community interest, amassing roughly 1,000 merged pull requests in its first eight weeks. The Zed integration alone involved more than 145 pull requests from over 55 individual contributors. Both companies plan to keep ACP open for other editors and agents, positioning the specification as a potential analogue to the widely adopted Language Server Protocol for language tooling.
