Microsoft has discontinued sales and rentals of digital movies and television shows across the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs and Xbox consoles, effective 18 July 2025. The move ends nearly two decades of the company’s direct video retail business, which began with the Zune Video Marketplace in 2006, evolved into Xbox Video in 2012 and was renamed Movies & TV in 2015. Customers retain access to previously purchased content through the Movies & TV app on Windows and Xbox, and downloads will continue to play at their original resolution. Microsoft is not providing refunds and says purchases cannot be transferred to other platforms, although U.S. users may link eligible films through the Movies Anywhere service. The shutdown follows Microsoft’s broader retreat from first-party media services, including the closure of Groove Music in 2017. The company is directing users to third-party providers such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home for future purchases and rentals.
