The Eastern Cape government is actively responding to the aftermath of recent floods affecting the OR Tambo and King Sabata Dalindyebo municipalities. Eastern Cape CoGTA MEC Zolile Williams has confirmed that the province is reprioritizing budgets from these municipalities and other departments to address flood relief efforts, although the exact amount of additional funding from higher levels of government remains unconfirmed. Officials, including mayors from the affected municipalities and disaster management teams, have been conducting oversight visits to various care centres housing flood victims in Mthatha. Williams stated that residents wishing to return to their homes in Decoligny may do so if their houses are not in low-lying areas, and the government will assist with rebuilding homes and providing groceries until further notice. He acknowledged delays in the delivery of food aid but assured that services would be delivered. Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane highlighted that natural disasters linked to climate change have severely strained the department's limited resources, with the recent floods exceeding the budget allocated for the entire financial year. The government plans to relocate homeless families to newly identified land and renovate partially demolished homes to support affected residents. Additionally, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli reported that about 600 people affected by floods in Saldanha on the West Coast are receiving assistance.
