A cloudburst followed by days of intense monsoon rain has triggered flash floods and landslides across Mandi district in the north-Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, washing away roads, bridges and homes. Local officials say at least ten bodies have been recovered while more than thirty people remain missing, mainly in the Seraj and Nachan assembly constituencies. Roughly fifteen houses and a concrete bridge have been swept away, and large parts of the area are without electricity, drinking water or road access. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force are working with earth-moving equipment to reopen blocked roads and search for survivors. A relief camp has been set up for ninety-two residents of Saran village, and temporary shelters and food supplies are being flown into cut-off hamlets. Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Jairam Thakur, who surveyed the damage, warned that the destruction has set parts of Seraj “back by nearly 25 years.” The disaster has drawn a stream of senior politicians to the region. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited relief sites on Wednesday, announcing cash assistance of Rs 7 lakh for every family that lost its home and Rs 50,000 for each cow killed. Union minister and BJP president JP Nadda, accompanied by Thakur, toured several villages and said the flooding had caused damage at fifty-one separate locations statewide. Mandi’s newly elected MP, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, pledged to brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi on local needs. With more rain in the forecast, authorities are racing to restore basic services and relocate people from vulnerable slopes. The state government has appealed to federal agencies for additional helicopters, engineering support and funds to rebuild washed-out infrastructure once rescue operations conclude.
