The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile has approved design proposals to upgrade South Africa’s Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to Grade 1 status, the level required to host Formula 1 races. Circuit owners plan an overhaul costing about R180 million, which will modernise safety features, pit and paddock facilities and track layout. The upgrades are intended to support South Africa’s bid to stage its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in nearly three decades. Kyalami chief executive Toby Venter said additional government backing will be essential to secure a race once the renovation is complete. South African motorsport officials are expected to submit a formal bid after construction timelines are finalised.
