South Africa’s National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has appointed Major General Solomon Makgatho as acting divisional commissioner for Crime Intelligence, saying the move will preserve continuity and bolster the unit’s strategic capacity amid an intensifying governance crisis inside the South African Police Service (SAPS). Masemola told reporters the SAPS is ready to brief President Cyril Ramaphosa on allegations made at the weekend by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claimed senior officers and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu interfered in high-profile criminal investigations. The commissioner insisted routine policing is unaffected. Addressing specific claims, Masemola said he never authorised the disbandment of the task team investigating political killings and confirmed that security around Mkhwanazi has been enhanced after the provincial commissioner reported receiving threats. The controversy widened when Mchunu acknowledged he knows businessman Brown Mogotsi—whom Mkhwanazi linked to alleged tender corruption—after previously denying any association. Parliamentary Police Portfolio Committee chair Ian Cameron has called for lifestyle audits of senior SAPS officials and an ad-hoc inquiry into the allegations. National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza rejected opposition demands for a floor debate but instructed the portfolio committees on Police and on Justice and Constitutional Development, together with the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, to examine the matter urgently and report back. The governing ANC has urged Ramaphosa to treat the issue with the "seriousness and urgency" required for a matter of national security.
