National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has confirmed that she is considering actions following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused police top brass of collusion with criminal syndicates. Didiza has directed the Police, Justice and Constitutional Development, and Intelligence committees to jointly investigate the claims concerning the safety and security of South Africa. Some political parties have called for a debate in the National Assembly on the matter, but Didiza has indicated that this is not the appropriate course at this time. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a criminal case against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu at the Cape Town Police Station, accusing him of lying in Parliament about his knowledge of Brown Mogotsi, a figure linked to the alleged criminal syndicate raised twice by Mkhwanazi. Parliament is moving towards establishing an ad hoc committee to thoroughly probe these allegations of corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga is chairing an inquiry into Mkhwanazi’s claims, with a budget of approximately R147.9 million allocated over six months. The inquiry is also considering measures to protect witnesses involved in the investigation. The situation has sparked public and political debate about corruption, law enforcement credibility, and the broader implications for South Africa’s governance and security.
