South Africa’s National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has directed three parliamentary committees—the portfolio committees on Police, Justice and Constitutional Development, and the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence—to investigate allegations of high-level corruption and political interference raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi told a weekend briefing that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu had interfered in criminal investigations and maintained links with underworld figures, including businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, whose company secured a R360 million South African Police Service contract in 2024. Mkhwanazi also questioned the disbanding of the provincial task team that handled politically motivated killings. Mchunu has denied any relationship with Matlala, saying he ordered a review of the contract once possible irregularities emerged and that the deal has since been terminated. Didiza rejected requests from two opposition parties for an immediate parliamentary debate, arguing the claims remain unsubstantiated, but instructed the committees to report back to the National Assembly on an “urgent” basis.
