The South American football confederation Conmebol has ordered that the VAR review area be relocated to the side of the pitch opposite the team benches for all of its tournaments, including the 2025 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The directive, announced on 16 July, follows successful trials during this week’s Sudamericana play-off matches. According to Conmebol’s referees committee, the new placement situates the Review Area in a zone with fewer technical staff and less operational traffic, giving match officials "greater serenity and impartiality" when making on-field decisions. Implementation will be gradual and contingent on each stadium’s infrastructure. The regional change coincides with a separate global review of the Laws of the Game. Football’s rulemaking body, the International Football Association Board, is considering measures that would forbid rebound attempts after a missed penalty and broaden VAR’s remit to cover second yellow cards and disputed corner-kick awards. The package is due for discussion in November, with final approval expected by March 2026 and possible enforcement from 1 June 2026, ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup in North America.
