On July 14, 2025, the 60th anniversary of NASA's Mariner 4 mission was commemorated. Launched in late 1964, Mariner 4 made its closest approach to Mars on July 15, 1965, at a distance of 6,118 miles. It transmitted the first close-up photographic images of Mars to Earth on July 16, marking a milestone in planetary exploration. The probe maintained communication until December 21, 1967. Additionally, July 15 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint U.S.-Soviet space flight. On July 15, 1975, Soyuz 19 launched from Baikonur, and Apollo 18 launched from Kennedy Space Center, culminating in a historic docking. This mission was the last manned U.S. spaceflight before the Space Shuttle program began in 1981. Also noted was the July 15, 2009 launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-127, which delivered the Japanese Exposed Facility and Experiment Logistics Module to the International Space Station.
