Spain's IBEX 35 index rose 3.4% over the week, closing at 13,355 points, and recovering to levels seen prior to the reciprocal tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. The index gained 1.33% in Friday's session, with notable advances from Mapfre, Ferrovial, and Sacyr, while Indra declined. Bankinter reported a first-quarter net profit of €270 million, an increase of 34.5% compared to the same period last year, with a return close to 19%. The bank's results exceeded expectations, supported by higher commissions and a 5% increase in credit investment, which offset a decline in net interest margin. Bankinter did not account for the banking tax in this period, as deductions from corporate tax reduced the effective charge to zero. The bank reaffirmed its target to achieve €1 billion in profit for 2025. Mapfre posted a net profit of €276 million for the first quarter, up 27.6% year-on-year, with premiums reaching €8.58 billion. The company's non-life combined ratio improved to 94.1%, and return on equity reached 11.7%. Mapfre's performance was supported by a recovery in car insurance and growth in non-life business, offsetting a net cost of €85 million from California wildfires. The insurer announced a final gross dividend of €0.095 per share to be paid on May 29, and its shares rose nearly 8% during the session. The market environment was influenced by a more conciliatory tone from the Trump administration regarding trade policy, with indications of potential tariff reductions and ongoing negotiations with China. This contributed to gains across European markets and supported cyclical sectors including banks, insurers, and construction companies.
