The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) was held from June 30 to July 3, 2025, in Seville, Spain, convened by the Spanish government in alignment with United Nations General Assembly resolution 78/231. The conference gathered global leaders and experts to address the $4 trillion financing gap hindering progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key figures included Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and King Felipe VI of Spain. The event focused on reforming the global financial architecture, promoting multilateralism, fairer tax systems, debt relief, and investment in local solutions. The conference culminated in the adoption of the "Sevilla Commitment" and a Platform for Action, setting a renewed global framework for sustainable development financing. Throughout the event, Sánchez participated in multiple sessions, including discussions on multilateral trade systems, science and technology innovation, global health initiatives with WHO Director Tedros Adhanom, and sovereign debt architecture. Following the conference, on July 16, 2025, Sánchez traveled to Mauritania with seven ministers to reinforce cooperation on migration, a critical issue given Mauritania's role as a source country for many migrants arriving in the Canary Islands. During his visit in Nouakchott, Sánchez emphasized the importance of safe, regular, and orderly migration as beneficial to both Spain and Mauritania, highlighting shared interests in security, development, and prosperity. He also acknowledged Spain's history as a country of emigrants and the significant contribution of immigrants to Spain's economic progress. The Spanish government aims to support Mauritania in better controlling its coasts to reduce irregular migration flows to Spain.
