Spain’s labour market set fresh records in June, with the number of workers registered with Social Security climbing to 21.86 million, the highest on record, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration said on Wednesday. Payrolls grew by 76,720 from May, a 0.3% increase and the strongest June advance in six years excluding pandemic distortions. Commerce created 32,103 positions and hospitality 25,590, jointly supplying three-quarters of the gains and offsetting a loss of 55,568 jobs in education after the school year ended. Registered unemployment fell by 48,920 to 2.41 million, the lowest level for any June since 2008. The services sector accounted for most of the decline, and joblessness dropped across all regions and age groups. Structural indicators continued to improve: female employment reached a record 10.33 million, and workers under 30 and over 55 expanded faster than the average. Foreign employees, whose ranks exceeded 3.07 million in May and now represent about 14% of the labour force, have supplied roughly 40% of the jobs created over the past three years.
