Spain’s southeastern farming town of Torre Pacheco has endured four nights of street violence after the 9 July beating of a 68-year-old resident, allegedly by three Moroccan youths. Footage of the assault spread rapidly online, prompting far-right activists to call for a “hunt” of migrants and drawing outsiders to the 40,000-person municipality, where roughly a third of the population is of North-African origin. Clashes between ultra-right demonstrators, local youths of Moroccan descent and riot police have left several people hurt, damaged shops and vehicles and forced many businesses to close. To prevent further escalation, the Interior Ministry has deployed more than 120 Civil Guard officers, set up roadblocks at town entrances and barred unauthorised protests. Police have arrested at least 14 people, including the three Moroccan suspects in the original assault and a 29-year-old private security guard accused of running the Telegram network “Deport Them Now”, which urged followers to organise vigilante patrols. Telegram has since shut the channel, and Spain’s national hate-crimes prosecutor is examining both the online calls to violence and recent statements by Vox’s regional leader José Ángel Antelo that link immigration to crime. Leaders of Torre Pacheco’s Moroccan community have publicly urged residents to stay indoors and avoid confrontation, while Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska vowed to prosecute those behind the xenophobic attacks. A far-right rally on Tuesday drew only about 100 people amid the heavy police presence, offering a tentative lull, but authorities warned that tensions remain high and investigations are ongoing.
