Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met with Greek Orthodox Patriarch John X Yazigi at the People’s Palace in Damascus, marking a notable interaction following a period of reported tensions. The meeting, which took place three days after a reconciliation initiative led by Sharaa's brother Maher, emphasized the Church's role in promoting unity, citizenship, and civil peace among Syrians. President al-Sharaa highlighted the importance of a reconciliatory approach in state governance, rejecting sectarianism, revenge, and divisive rhetoric. He warned against internal power struggles and material gain pursuits that could undermine Syria’s post-victory phase. Al-Sharaa also condemned calls for Syria’s division as politically ignorant and unrealistic, affirming that Syrian society rejects partition. Additionally, he noted attempts by some international parties to weaken Syria by targeting its internal unity and dismissed the notion that external forces like Israel could be leveraged to gain power within Syria.
