A bipartisan U.S. delegation led by Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Joe Wilson held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on 25 August, marking the highest-level congressional visit to the country since the civil war began more than a decade ago. The trip coincided with the formal lifting of U.S. economic sanctions on Syria, a policy change the Treasury Department confirmed earlier in the day.
