The most outspoken person in Congress for Syria before and after the fall of the regime finally got to meet Ahmad al-Shar'a in Damascus today alongside Senator Shaheen and Ambassador Barrack https://t.co/yqDo20HpkA
It was my honor to meet with 🇸🇾President Ahmed al-Sharaa as part of a bipartisan delegation with @USAMBTurkiye and Ranking Member Shaheen of @SFRCdems to discuss a bright, unified, and stable future for Syria. This trip was particularly meaningful for me, and I am grateful for https://t.co/AGfdE5AV20
A bipartisan U.S. delegation led by Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Joe Wilson held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on 25 August, marking the highest-level congressional visit to the country since the civil war began more than a decade ago. The trip coincided with the formal lifting of U.S. economic sanctions on Syria, a policy change the Treasury Department confirmed earlier in the day. Shaheen, Wilson and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack also met with church leaders at an interfaith conference at the St. Ephraim Syriac Orthodox Monastery in Saydnaya, signaling Washington’s intent to re-engage with a wide range of Syrian stakeholders as reconstruction and reconciliation efforts accelerate.
