The Trump administration has extended its metal-trade barriers by imposing an additional 5% tariff on more than 400 consumer products that contain steel or aluminum, ranging from baby strollers and motorcycles to tableware and household appliances. The measure, announced Monday, broadens duties that previously focused on raw metals to cover a far wider swath of finished goods. The move follows President Donald Trump’s May decision to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50%, and further complicates supply chains already adapting to overlapping levies. Logistics firms warned that the cascading rules are becoming unworkable, while small importers say they lack the resources to navigate the expanding lists. Economists expect the broader duties to lift prices on everyday items. “Anything that takes a big amount of those raw materials as inputs—cars, refrigerators, toaster ovens, soda cans—is certainly going to be affected,” said Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath. Robert Budway, former head of the Can Manufacturers Institute, added that food processors are likely to pass higher packaging costs on to shoppers, raising grocery bills.
