Novak Djokovic shook off an error-strewn opening set to defeat Australia’s Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday and reach his 16th Wimbledon quarterfinal. The sixth-seeded Serb, 38, trailed 1-4 in the fourth set before reeling off five straight games to close out the three-hour, 19-minute contest on Centre Court. The seven-time champion faced 19 break points and was broken five times, but he converted key chances of his own, winning 14 of the last 15 points. With eight-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer watching from the Royal Box, Djokovic quipped afterward that it was “good to break the curse,” noting he had lost the previous two matches Federer attended. Monday’s result gave Djokovic his 101st match victory at the All England Club and improved his record to 43 wins in his past 45 Wimbledon outings. He next meets No. 22 seed Flavio Cobolli, who advanced by beating Marin Cilic, as Djokovic continues his bid for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam trophy and an eighth Wimbledon crown that would tie Federer’s men’s record.
