Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic reached her first Wimbledon semifinal on Wednesday, edging 18-year-old Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in a pair of tense tie-break sets on Centre Court. The victory gives the 28-year-old her second career Grand Slam semifinal and her first since the 2019 US Open. Bencic’s run caps a rapid return from maternity leave. She gave birth to daughter Bella in April 2024, resumed competition six months later ranked outside the top 400 and entered this year’s Championships at No. 35. She is the first Swiss player to make the singles semifinals at Wimbledon since Roger Federer in 2019 and only the second Swiss woman in the Open Era to do so, following Martina Hingis. Andreeva had become the youngest woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Maria Sharapova in 2005, having dispatched Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3 two days earlier. Her loss sets up a semifinal between Bencic and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Liudmila Samsonova.
