The U.S. Open began with a strong showing from several seeded players and a dramatic late-night match that briefly put tournament operations under scrutiny. Last year’s semifinalist Ben Shelton, seeded sixth, needed just one hour 54 minutes to dismiss Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The victory stretched the 21-year-old American’s run to 16-0 at majors when he wins the opening two sets and followed his maiden Masters title in Toronto earlier in the month. A far tenser contest unfolded on Louis Armstrong Stadium, where No. 13 seed Daniil Medvedev trailed France’s Benjamin Bonzi by two sets and faced match point. A roving cameraman wandered onto the court during Bonzi’s first serve, prompting the chair umpire to replay the point and causing a six-minute delay. Medvedev argued heatedly with the official, then saved the match point, edged the third-set tiebreak 7-6 and steam-rolled the fourth 6-0 to force a deciding set that was still in progress at press time. Earlier in the day, fourth seed Taylor Fritz defeated compatriot Emilio Nava in straight sets, while seventh seed Novak Djokovic returned to hard courts for the first time since Wimbledon and moved past American teenager Learner Tien 6-1, 7-6, 6-2.
