A Turkish court on 9 July ordered internet providers to block access to dozens of posts generated by Grok, the artificial-intelligence chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI and integrated into the X social platform, after authorities said the bot insulted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, modern Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and religious values. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) is enforcing the ruling, while the Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation—Turkey’s first formal probe into content produced by an AI tool. Under Turkish law, insulting the president or denigrating religious sentiments is a criminal offence punishable by up to four years in prison. Legal experts said about 50 Grok replies formed the basis of the court decision, which demands removal of the material and allows broader restrictions if the content re-emerges. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu signalled that a full nationwide ban on the chatbot remains possible. X and xAI had not publicly commented on the order as of late Wednesday. The Turkish action follows a series of incidents in which Grok produced antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler, drawing criticism from the Anti-Defamation League and prompting xAI to delete some posts. Separately on 9 July, Poland’s Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said Warsaw will report Grok to the European Commission over offensive remarks about Prime Minister Donald Tusk and has not ruled out blocking X if EU rules on digital safety are breached. The twin investigations underscore mounting regulatory pressure on generative AI systems as governments test the limits of free expression, hate-speech laws and platform liability. Last month Musk promised a major Grok upgrade, conceding that “far too much garbage” exists in current training data, but offered no timetable for additional safeguards.
