Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, aged 80, has officially confirmed his intention to seek re-election in the 2026 presidential polls, aiming for a seventh term in office. Museveni has been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa's longest-serving leaders with nearly four decades of rule. He has formally picked nomination forms to contest as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party's presidential flag bearer and party chairperson. Museveni's bid to extend his tenure would bring him closer to five decades in power. The ruling NRM party has endorsed him as its sole candidate for both the party chairmanship and presidential flag bearer positions ahead of the upcoming elections. The election campaign period has seen some disruptions, including reports of a break-in at NRM offices and alleged theft of voter registers. Other notable figures within the NRM, such as Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, have also been nominated for key party positions. Museveni's family remains influential in Uganda's political and military spheres, with his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba serving as Chief of Defence Forces and his wife Janet Museveni as Minister of Education. The 2026 election is expected to further extend Museveni's long-standing rule in Uganda.
