In response to recent U.S. legislation that allows the confiscation of Russian assets, Russia is considering retaliatory measures, including the potential seizure of assets belonging to Americans in Russia. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, emphasized that Russia's response would be significant and could involve legal changes to enable the confiscation of assets from individuals from 'unfriendly countries.' This move comes after American lawmakers approved a bill earlier this week permitting the seizure of Russian funds. The U.S. had previously frozen $5 billion of Russian central bank assets in 2022, aiming to prevent Moscow from using these funds to support the Russian ruble. An ex-IMF official warned that such actions could accelerate the de-dollarization process.
