Costco Wholesale Corp. has decided not to dispense the abortion medication mifepristone at any of its more than 500 pharmacies in the United States, Bloomberg News reported and Reuters confirmed on Thursday. The warehouse retailer said there is little customer demand for the drug. The decision follows lobbying by a coalition of faith-based activists, including Alliance Defending Freedom and Inspire Investing, that had urged Costco to avoid stocking the medication. The same coalition now plans to pressure CVS Health and Walgreens Boots Alliance, two of the few national chains currently certified to provide mifepristone in states where it is legal. The FDA approved the pill in 2000 for pregnancies up to 10 weeks, but access has become a flashpoint in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that ended federal abortion protections.
