The U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday that George Washington University violated federal civil-rights law by being “deliberately indifferent” to antisemitic harassment during pro-Palestinian protests on its Washington, D.C., campus last spring. A letter signed by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon concluded that Jewish, American-Israeli and Israeli students and faculty faced a hostile environment in April and May 2024, when demonstrators erected an encampment in University Yard. Investigators cited at least eight formal complaints alleging students were surrounded, threatened and ordered to leave public areas while university police stood by. The Justice Department found the institution failed to act despite having what it called “actual notice” of the abuse, placing the university in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The agency is offering the school a voluntary resolution agreement but warned it will move to enforcement if GWU does not respond by Aug. 22, a step that could jeopardize millions of dollars in federal funding. GWU spokesperson Shannon McClendon said the university is reviewing the findings, adding that “antisemitism has absolutely no place on our campuses” and that the school believes it took appropriate action during the protests. President Ellen Granberg has not yet publicly commented. George Washington is the latest institution swept up in the Trump administration’s nationwide crackdown on campus antisemitism. In late July, the Justice Department issued a similar finding against the University of California, Los Angeles, and threatened to withhold research funds. Federal officials have also scrutinized Harvard, Columbia and other universities as they intensify pressure on colleges to curb antisemitic incidents linked to the war in Gaza.
