Leaders of the City University of New York, the University of California at Berkeley and Georgetown University defended their handling of antisemitism allegations during a three-hour House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing on Tuesday. Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez, Chancellor Rich Lyons and Interim President Robert Groves faced repeated questions from Republican members who said universities have failed to protect Jewish students since the October 2023 Hamas attack prompted campus protests. Committee chair Tim Walberg opened the ninth hearing in the panel’s series by warning universities that tolerating antisemitism “comes at their own risk.” Rep. Burgess Owens called campuses the “genesis” of rising hatred, while Rep. Elise Stefanik pressed Matos Rodríguez over a swastika displayed at Hunter College, CUNY’s employment of a former Council on American-Islamic Relations official and faculty links to Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. Stefanik later urged New York Governor Kathy Hochul to seek the chancellor’s resignation. University leaders said they condemn antisemitism and outlined new measures. Lyons cited mandatory antisemitism training for incoming Berkeley students and stricter protest rules around Sather Gate. Groves told lawmakers Georgetown had dismissed staff and faculty for antisemitic conduct, and Matos Rodríguez said CUNY investigates every complaint and will act against rule-breakers. All three argued that protecting free speech is integral to their response. The session was briefly interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, underscoring the tensions that have fueled congressional scrutiny. More than 60 colleges are also being probed by the U.S. Education Department’s civil-rights office, while earlier committee hearings contributed to the 2024 resignations of Harvard and University of Pennsylvania presidents. Lawmakers indicated the investigation will now focus more heavily on university funding streams and faculty activity.
