The Republican-led House Oversight Committee and its Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation have begun an investigation into the Wikimedia Foundation, alleging that organized campaigns have manipulated Wikipedia entries to sway U.S. public opinion on sensitive geopolitical issues. In a 27-August letter to Wikimedia chief executive officer Maryana Iskander, Chairman James Comer and Subcommittee Chair Nancy Mace requested internal documents, communications and policies related to volunteer editors flagged for violating platform rules. Lawmakers cited an Anti-Defamation League report contending that coordinated networks altered articles on the Israel-Palestine conflict to portray Israel negatively, as well as separate studies warning of pro-Kremlin messaging seeded into Wikipedia pages. The committee says it aims to determine how the nonprofit identifies and disciplines bad actors and what safeguards are in place to protect the site’s credibility as a neutral information source. A Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson confirmed receipt of the congressional request and said the organization "welcomes the opportunity to respond" but declined further comment on the specific allegations. No timetable for the foundation’s response has been made public. The probe underscores intensifying bipartisan concern in Washington over the role of foreign influence and disinformation on major online platforms, following earlier inquiries into social-media companies and artificial-intelligence training data.
