US House investigates Spotify Regarding Censorship Concerns, As Reported By NY Post 🎧🇺🇸
House Probes Spotify Over Censorship Concerns - NY Post
The US House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, has opened an investigation into Spotify over allegations that the audio-streaming platform is censoring constitutionally protected speech. In a letter dated July 29 to Spotify Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek, Jordan said recent foreign content-moderation laws could be pressuring the company to restrict American users’ access to certain material. The committee ordered Spotify to preserve all communications with foreign governments, the White House and other US officials, and to submit the records by Aug. 12. Jordan argued that European Union and United Kingdom rules requiring online platforms to remove “disinformation” carry fines large enough to influence how content is handled globally, potentially infringing on US free-speech rights. Spotify’s moderation policies have drawn criticism from multiple sides. The company flagged COVID-19 discussions by podcaster Joe Rogan in 2022 and banned Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast in 2020, reinstating it last month. Those episodes, along with mounting regulatory pressure abroad, have intensified scrutiny of how the Stockholm-based firm balances content oversight with free-expression commitments.
