NASA intends to deactivate a group of Earth-observation satellites that collect data on planet-warming pollution as early as October, according to a report by CNN. Among the spacecraft slated for shutdown are two satellites that generate detailed maps of global carbon-dioxide emissions. The move follows a request from former U.S. President Donald Trump for the agency to halt the mission of the two CO₂-tracking satellites, people familiar with the matter said. NASA has not publicly disclosed the cost savings or scientific trade-offs associated with the decision, and the agency did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
