The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to eliminate its Office of Research and Development, resulting in layoffs of hundreds of scientists, including chemists, biologists, and toxicologists. This move will reduce the agency's workforce by at least 23%, effectively dismantling its scientific research arm. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling that permits the Trump administration to reduce the federal workforce and restructure agencies. Concurrently, the EPA intends to propose repealing vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards and may remove greenhouse gases from the list of dangerous pollutants. Separately, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is set to cut more than 50% of its Washington DC-area jobs and relocate most of its staff closer to farmers to concentrate on its core mission of supporting American agriculture.
