Analysis of recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data reveals that a substantial portion of immigrants detained in the Los Angeles area and nationwide lack criminal convictions. Between June 1 and June 10, nearly 70% of those arrested in Los Angeles had no criminal history, contradicting White House claims that ICE targets primarily criminals. Nationwide, more than half of ICE detainees under President Trump have no criminal convictions, with only about 8% convicted of violent crimes. Detentions of immigrants without criminal records have increased sharply since May amid an expanded immigration enforcement effort. Additionally, less than 1% of deportees had murder convictions, despite official vows to remove the worst offenders. ICE data also indicates that 84% of those currently held are deemed by the agency to pose "no threat." The large-scale immigration court arrests starting in May have caused fear among asylum seekers and immigrant communities. From January 1 to June 24, approximately 100,000 people were deported by ICE, with 70,583 having criminal convictions, although many of these infractions were minor.
