California Governor Gavin Newsom has re-engineered his social-media messaging to parody President Donald Trump, posting all-caps screeds, memes and taunting nicknames that closely mimic the president’s online style. The governor has also floated campaign-style merchandise bearing slogans such as “Newsom 2028,” stoking speculation about his national ambitions. The heightened trolling began in early August as Newsom sought attention for a Nov. 4 special election on whether to redraw California’s congressional maps. ABC7 San Francisco reports the governor’s press-office account on X has gained roughly 250,000 followers and logged more than 225 million impressions since Aug. 1, suggesting the strategy is generating significant engagement. A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, conducted for the Los Angeles Times, shows 46 percent of registered voters support the redistricting measure, while 36 percent oppose it and 18 percent remain undecided, underscoring the stakes of the upcoming vote. President Trump has dismissed Newsom as “incompetent,” and Fox News personalities have labeled the governor’s posts “childish,” yet some commentators—including HBO host Bill Maher—say Democrats may need equally combative tactics to compete online. Whether the social-media blitz translates into ballot-box support or future presidential momentum remains to be seen.
