A Texas state district judge has broadened a temporary restraining order against former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke, his political action committee Powered by People and the fundraising platform ActBlue, barring them from soliciting or distributing money to Democratic legislators who left the state to prevent votes on redistricting and flood-relief bills. Judge Megan Fahey extended the order through 5 September after Attorney General Ken Paxton argued that O’Rourke’s group continued raising funds in defiance of an earlier 9 August directive. Paxton’s amended complaint accuses O’Rourke of using the donations—more than $1 million by the state’s count—to bankroll travel and other perks for the absent lawmakers, calling the effort deceptive and harmful to Texas consumers. The judge agreed the state faced imminent harm, ordered any banks handling the funds to freeze the accounts and scheduled a 26 August contempt hearing at which O’Rourke could face jail time and further sanctions if violations are confirmed.
