The U.S. State Department said it is reviewing the records of more than 55 million foreigners who hold valid American visas, an unprecedented sweep intended to identify violations that could lead to visa revocation and deportation. All visa categories—including tourism, study and employment—are now subject to what officials term “continuous vetting.” Under the policy, consular and law-enforcement databases, social-media posts and other information will be mined for signs of ineligibility such as overstaying authorized periods, criminal conduct, threats to public safety, or involvement with terrorist organizations. If disqualifying evidence emerges, the visa will be cancelled and the individual, if present in the United States, may be removed. The initiative sharply broadens an effort that had focused chiefly on students and exchange visitors. State Department figures show that since President Donald Trump began his second term in January, more than 6,000 student visas have already been revoked—roughly quadruple the tally in the comparable period a year earlier. Officials say overall visa cancellations have more than doubled year on year. Separately, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an immediate pause on issuing new work visas for commercial truck drivers while screening protocols are re-examined, citing road-safety concerns. Immigration analysts warn the wider review could strain consular resources and disrupt travel and labor supply, but the administration argues the measures are essential to protect national security and public safety.
