The Trump administration accelerated its immigration enforcement build-out on 19 Aug., adding or activating detention capacity in Texas, Florida and Nebraska as part of a nationwide push to speed deportations. DHS officials say the moves follow a jump in the number of people held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which exceeded 56,000 in June, the highest level since 2019. At Fort Bliss in El Paso, DHS opened what is now the country’s largest federal immigration lock-up, able to house as many as 5,000 people awaiting removal. The American Civil Liberties Union likened the complex to World War II internment camps, a comparison an agency spokeswoman dismissed as “deranged and lazy,” noting that most detainees at the site are under final deportation orders. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis said the shuttered Baker Correctional Institution has been refitted as the “Deportation Depot,” with room for more than 1,300 detainees and a runway 15 minutes away for charter flights. Florida Republicans briefly sold shirts and hats carrying a logo resembling Home Depot’s; the retailer objected, and the party removed the merchandise the same day. Nebraska became the latest state to join the network, with Governor Jim Pillen and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem unveiling plans to convert a minimum-security work-ethic camp in McCook into a 280-bed center dubbed the “Cornhusker Clink.” About 20 Nebraska National Guard troops will provide logistical support once the site begins receiving detainees. Civil-rights advocates are challenging conditions at the Everglades-based “Alligator Alcatraz” facility and have filed separate suits alleging denial of legal access and environmental violations. Nevada Republicans, meanwhile, floated a “Coyote Compound” concept, underscoring how the administration’s rapid expansion has triggered both copycat proposals and mounting opposition from businesses, local residents and immigrant-rights groups.
