In August 2025, several Democratic members of Congress conducted oversight visits to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers in California and Colorado. Representatives Judy Chu, Jimmy Gomez, Maxine Waters, and Brad Sherman toured the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center and the DHS ICE enforcement office, seeking transparency and accountability regarding detention conditions and enforcement practices. During the visit, Gomez noted that the downtown Los Angeles detention center, which held over 300 detainees daily during the summer, had only two detainees at the time of inspection, highlighting concerns about ICE and DHS limiting oversight access. Meanwhile, Colorado’s four Democratic congressional members visited the ICE detention center in Aurora, meeting detainees including immigrant activist Jeanette Vizguerra. ICE informed Colorado lawmakers of plans to open a new detention facility near the Denver metropolitan area by the end of 2025, repurposing a closed state prison in Hudson. Concurrently, the Trump administration is advancing immigration enforcement policies, with reports indicating that the country’s largest private prison companies are experiencing increased profits amid heightened immigration arrests and detentions. Additionally, the administration is developing new detention centers on the border, including a large facility dubbed “Camp East Montana,” following the establishment of “Alligator Alcatraz.” These developments underscore ongoing federal efforts to expand immigration detention capacity amid calls for greater oversight and transparency.
