The Trump administration has halted distribution of more than $6 billion in federal education grants intended for after-school activities, English language instruction, migrant education and adult literacy. The Office of Management and Budget said it is reviewing the awards after finding that some recipients allegedly used the money to subsidize what it called “a radical left-wing agenda.” An initial OMB audit claimed that New York schools steered English-language funds to groups supporting undocumented immigrants, while Washington state helped students without legal status obtain scholarships. The office also cited grant-supported programming on “queer resistance in the arts” as evidence of misuse. No final decision has been made on individual grants, OMB said. State education leaders warn the freeze will leave summer camps, after-school care and classroom staffing in limbo. Colorado officials demanded the immediate release of about $70 million, saying some classrooms could be left without teachers. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said $108 million owed to her state remains blocked. Advocates argue the move threatens services for the nation’s 5.3 million English-learner students—most of whom are U.S.-born—and conflates them with immigration enforcement. They also note that under the Supreme Court’s 1982 Plyler v. Doe ruling, public schools must serve children regardless of legal status. House Democratic appropriators accused the administration of unlawfully withholding as much as $7 billion and pursuing a broader effort to undercut public education. The administration has not indicated when its review will conclude or whether the frozen funds will be restored.
