President Donald Trump said Friday that Chicago will be the next city to face a federal crime-reduction operation once the administration completes its ongoing crackdown in Washington, D.C. Speaking at the White House on 22 August, Trump noted that the government remains "willing to bring in the regular military" if National Guard forces now deployed in the capital prove insufficient. Calling Chicago "a mess" and labeling its mayor, Brandon Johnson, "grossly incompetent," he pledged to "straighten that one out probably next," adding that New York City would follow. The administration earlier this month dispatched National Guard troops to Washington and placed the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal control in an effort to curb violent crime, homelessness and illegal immigration. Trump said officials in other cities have privately requested similar assistance and indicated that Chicago will be the first expansion of the initiative.
