The Trump administration has asked Naval Station Great Lakes, a naval base about 35 miles north of Chicago, to provide logistical support for immigration enforcement operations, base spokesperson Matt Mogle said Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security is seeking “limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure and other logistical needs,” he added. Mogle noted that the base has not yet approved the request and has received no formal inquiry regarding a National Guard deployment. The solicitation underscores the administration’s drive to broaden federal immigration initiatives beyond Washington, where troops have recently assisted with crime and immigration enforcement. White House border adviser Tom Homan said federal authorities plan to intensify Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in several sanctuary jurisdictions—including New York, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and Chicago—and are evaluating the Great Lakes installation as an operational hub. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, reiterated his opposition to any military involvement in Chicago, saying the city neither needs nor wants such intervention. The administration’s proposal follows President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to deploy additional federal resources to Democratic-led cities he accuses of failing to curb crime and illegal immigration.
