A group of more than 100 youths set off fireworks, rode dirt bikes and fired shots in Washington, D.C.’s Navy Yard neighbourhood shortly after midnight on 10 Aug., prompting an emergency response from local police, the FBI and agents from the Department of Homeland Security. Authorities said three firearms, including one reported stolen, were recovered and several arrests were made for weapons and traffic offences. The disturbance came as President Donald Trump escalates a city-wide crime crackdown. White House officials said roughly 450 federal officers from nearly 20 agencies fanned out across all four quadrants of the capital on Saturday night, the second day of a surge that includes the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Marshals Service. Separately, the FBI has assigned as many as 120 agents to help curb carjackings and other violent offences in the district. Trump has warned he could assume direct control of public safety in Washington if local leadership fails to rein in violence. The prospect of revoking the city’s home-rule powers has drawn support from some Republican lawmakers and conservative commentators. Mayor Muriel Bowser countered that federal officers already work alongside the Metropolitan Police and said the city "is not experiencing a crime spike," citing a 26 percent year-to-date drop in violent crime compared with 2024. She acknowledged, however, that the federal surge could continue for "larger numbers or longer periods of time" if ordered by the White House.
Washington used to be a great place to live (I grew up there) and was on the upswing in the years before COVID. Then @MayorBowser decided to crater the city with woke and progressive policies. A national disgrace. She needs to be removed, and home rule must be revoked.

Unfortunately @MayorBowser couldn’t be bothered to do this earlier in the summer when it was obviously the right thing to do. She was too busy swimming and partying. Because of her delay more Washingtonians were senselessly harmed. Time to end home rule. https://t.co/GoBwpCkHgX
