The U.S. Air Force has decided to purchase two Tesla Cybertrucks for use as live-fire missile targets at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This decision follows internal assessments revealing that Cybertrucks do not sustain the typical level of damage expected from major impacts, likely due to their angular design and unpainted stainless steel body. The military aims to test the durability of these vehicles under combat-like conditions, as there is a possibility that adversaries could employ similar vehicles on future battlefields. In addition to Cybertrucks, the Air Force is also seeking other vehicle types, including sedans and bongo trucks, to better simulate real-world threats. Tesla has been conducting its own durability tests on the Cybertruck, including reinforcing components such as rock sliders and metal battery armor plates. This initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Department of Defense to enhance autonomous and precision munitions testing capabilities.
