U.S. House lawmakers have sent a formal letter to the chief executives of Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Amazon asking them to detail what safeguards the companies have in place to protect undersea data cables from potential interference or attacks by China and Russia. The legislators also want the companies to disclose whether Chinese state-linked entities—including Huawei Marine, China Telecom and China Unicom—are involved in maintaining or servicing any submarine cable systems in which the U.S. firms hold ownership stakes.
