Thank you to @SecRollins for supporting FL citrus growers! The FDA’s plan to lower the orange juice Brix standard helps our farmers save costs and stay competitive while delivering quality juice made from FLORIDA oranges! 🍊 https://t.co/M9Thgk2aYX
The federal food stamp program is facing scrutiny in some states that want to block enrollees from using their government benefits to buy soda and candy. https://t.co/1oSBkHKPLj
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, under Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, has expanded restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to prohibit the purchase of soda, candy, and other junk foods in 13 states. These states include Florida, Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and Utah. The waivers, approved by the Trump administration, represent a notable change to the food stamp program, aiming to limit the use of government benefits for sugary sodas, candy, and prepared desserts. Florida’s waiver, recently approved, also bans energy drinks and prepared desserts from SNAP purchases. This initiative has drawn attention as states seek to address nutritional concerns among SNAP beneficiaries. Additionally, Florida’s citrus industry is benefiting from FDA plans to lower the orange juice Brix standard, which is expected to reduce costs and enhance competitiveness for Florida orange growers.
